There has been a lot of interesting research news out there recently concerning the human brain......For example, according to the recent Zone Net Health Newsletter (this company is affiliated with Dr. Barry Sears, an internationally known researcher), The brain is now known to be responsible for consciousness as well as thought.
In concert with our nervous systems, the brain controls autonomic functions in the body, such as respiration and heartbeat, for example. It both regulates and produces many types of hormones, while being responsible for cognitive processes such as perception and also memories. The core of who we are as humans is now attributed to our brains.
.........This excellent article then goes on to talk at length about the brain of a youngster.......A child is born with over one hundred billion brain cells, also known as neurons. These neurons form connections which are called synapses, that basically make up the wiring of the brain. The brain's growth is mostly due to changes in these specific neurons, which generally resemble trees. Think of each brain cell like a tiny sapling which gradually begins to sprout hundreds of long and branching dendrites. The dendrites function much like a persons arm in a relay race. They accept and transmit information packets throughout the brain, at speeds approaching two hundred and seventy miles per hour....
then it is pointed out, to gives us a clear picture...

The first 3 years of a child's life is quite critical in terms of brain development and will essentially determine the eventual strength and function of the wiring system. At 8 months, for example, a baby might have approaching a thousand trillion synapses. But by 10, this number decreases to some five hundred trillion synapses. This is a part of the reason why kids may learn a few different languages simultaneously without an accent, while grown-ups struggle with tapes and clumsy tongues.........
